Possible Clothing/Fashion Ideas

For my performance sequence the clothes being worn will be smart/casual match up with patterned shirts and waistcoats with natural suede shoes. Black skinny jeans with shirts undone and slightly rolled up sleeves.

For my narrative sequence I want my actress to show a innocent  natural side with the use of warm colours and clothing.

Possible Natural Make Up Ideas

I would like to create a natural, sophisticated make up look and I feel I would achieve this with the attention drawn the my actress' eyes. With the use of minimal colours and 'earthy' colours I can achieve this.

Possible Natural Hairstyle Ideas

The hairstyle I am trying to achieve is a natural waved look with a slightly windswept feel to portray a sense of innocence. My actress will be outside and will be wearing a hat so the natural beauty from the hair shines.

Cast List and Props for my Music Video

Because my chosen genre is folk rock, I am having a mainly performance based music video with a switch to a relevant narrative sequence.
The cast list for my narrative sequence is a female.
I have chosen my friend Ellie as she is a young budding performer and will take orders from me easily.

The cast list for my performance scenes are 4 of my musician friends. The music video band members are  Dave, Jon, Cauly and Kane. They are all fantastic musicians and will put there all in my performance.
Jon is playing the Double Bass with Kane playing the Guitar. Dave shall be playing the ukulele and Cauly will be playing the Piano.

My hair and beauty artist is my friend Georgia as she is very creative and talented with a good eye for detail when doing peoples make-up.

The props I will be using in my video are mainly during the performance sequence which are the following instrument; double bass, banjo, guitar and keyboard.
I will be setting the performance scene in a recording studio and the storyline sequence in a park/woodland area through the autumn trees.

Reconstruction of Lana Del Ray - Summertime Sadness

On our first day of the reconstruction process we planned what days we were going to film and at what times (see Production Plan), and then we assigned roles to each of the group (see Deconstruction and Reconstruction of a Media text).
On our first filming day we shot the second scene (30+) of the chosen music video. We spent a good our looking for the 'right' bush/tree to replicate similarly to the one in the original video and then filmed countless shots, changing camera angles and the cast members position.
On our second day of filming we shot the first scene and the third scene. Looking around our college site for parks or woodland areas with many trees was key and we came came across many good angled shots and shot many scenes and trying to get a clear match up to the original video. In the end we focused on a large area and managed to get some very good scenes. For the third scene finding an area to be able to match up to Lana falling in her video and was extremely hard as I (cast member) did not want to injure myself. So we created the first part of the scene between the trees, I thought very well.
On our third day of filming we shot the last scene. Finding 'pretty' gates around our chosen filming area was almost impossible so we did the best that we could and filmed near the college area.
After doing countless amounts of takes for each scene we all sat down around an editing suite and pulled across our film clips onto the editing program. We edited over a couple of days. Then as a group we went through each clip deleting the ones which weren't good enough to be linked together for our final product. Then after added our chosen song matched the timings together and lip sync so our mini reconstruction would flow. Once that was done we then changed the contrast or colour, changed the brightness and tone and finally added a smoke effect to end our reconstruction like done in the original music video.
We then showed our short reconstruction to our class and received some helpful feedback that we could take on board when filming our own music video.

Conventions of my chosen genre music video in detail

Conventions of modern folk rock music videos.

Cinematography.
- Camera shots that include establishing shot, master shot, medium shot and close up shot. These shots create emphasis on the artist or band members, their emotion and the location which is seen to tell the story. In the video below there are clear shots of the instruments and the band playing them which is a typical convention. Also medium shots show the lead singer for example, his emotional attraction to what he is singing
- Camera movements including pan, tracking shot and tilt. These movements follow the band members or artist, possibly portraying signals. In the video below pan for example is including to show the viewer the whole band, what instruments they play, how they dress etc.

Editing.
- Montage, continuity, transitions, eye line match, match-on-action, shot reverse shot and cut in are all editing techniques that allow changes to happen in, during or after a scene change. Having quick transitions but having continuity lyrically help change the atmosphere of the music. For example having a live performance in the video. This could also relate to how the band itself has grown, from a recording studio to a live gig.

Mise en Scene.
- Props are used to create a specific thought about a particular object of person.
- Costume usually reflects the genre of music and if the music video includes band members or a particular artist this may influence fans on how to dress etc. The costumes worn in this video represent the people themselves as an artist.
- Colour themes and lighting tend to set the mood of a song and create an atmosphere with particular lighting techniques enhancing artists. Having a black and white video does create an atmosphere but also adding different light techniques to alter the white lights do change the mood and draws attention to certain props.

Sound.
- Diegetic, non-diegetic and voiceover can all be used in a music video as the lyrics of the song itself or a narrative that may play part in a video.

Lyrics to chosen reconstruction of media text

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby you're the best

I got my red dress on tonight
Dancing in the dark in the pale moonlight
Got my hair up real big beauty queen style
High heels off, I'm feeling alive

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above all sizzling like your stare
Honey I'm on fire I feel it everywhere
Nothing scares me anymore

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness

I'm feelin' electric tonight
Cruising down the coast goin' by 99
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side
Oh if I go, I'll be happy tonight

Oh, my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above all sizzlin' like your stare
Honey I'm on fire I feel it everywhere
Nothing scares me anymore

Kiss me hard before you go
Summertime sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness

I think I'll miss you forever
Like the stars miss the sun in the morning skies
Late is better than never
Even if you're gone I'm gonna drive, drive

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness

Kiss me hard before you go
Summer time sadness
I just wanted you to know
That baby you're the best

I've got that summertime, summertime sadness
S-s-summertime, summertime sadness
Got that summertime, summertime sadness

Lyrics of my chosen song

Roll away your stone, I'll roll away mine
Together we can see what we will find
Don't leave me alone at this time
For I am afraid of what I will discover inside

Cause you told me that I would find a hole
Within the fragile substance of my soul
And I have filled this void with things unreal
And all the while my character it steals

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think?
And yet it dominates the things I see

It seems that all my bridges have been burnt
But you say that's exactly how this grace thing works
It's not the long walk home that will change this heart
But the welcome I receive with the restart

Darkness is a harsh term don't you think?
And yet it dominates the things I see
Darkness is a harsh term don't you think?
And yet it dominates the things I've seen

Stars hide your fires
These here are my desires
And I won't give them up to you this time around
And so I'll be found
With my stake stuck in the ground
Marking the territory of this newly impassioned soul

But you, you've gone too far this time
You have neither reason nor rhyme
With which to take this soul that is so rightfully mine

Skills Development Essay

I chose AS Media Studies to explore many creative possibilities, which is how I came to choosing my chosen briefs.

As part of my AS Foundation Portfolio media production work I created a front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine, using all original images and text, produced by myself with a minimum of four images taking into consideration the specific conventions of existing music magazines.

I researched my selected brief by analysing past magazines that I found on the internet or had myself. By doing this a number of times I identified the conventions of my selected music magazine genre. Once I have identified the codes and conventions of the music magazine relating to my chosen genre, which were modern indie, rock, classic indie and Americana, I began to look at how to create the production of the brief. I knew that it was important to use many creative and positive original images to make my music magazine stand out. I used the simple ‘market research’ approach by researching into existing college magazines and music magazine front covers, content pages and double page spreads. After noting similarities and listing the conventions of a music magazine I analysed two music magazine front covers, two music magazine content pages and two music magazine double page spreads which allowed me to understand and see visual similarities. This process produced many different aspects and showed me a wide range of specific music genre magazines. I did research into demographics & psychographics to see how target audiences were selected using S.E.G and age groups and this proved that the front cover of any music magazine is very important as it portrays to a certain target audience depending on their favourite genre. Also taking into consideration the price and how often magazines are to be published relates to the target audience. I countlessly did many ‘mock ups’ of magazine front covers and contents pages  on Microsoft Publisher and hand drawn drafts to help me use specific programs which widened and generated some of my ideas for my production work which then I posted on to my blog. With all of the market research I did, I posted it onto my blog, countlessly getting feedback from different audiences and my tutor which abled me to create more positive traits in my work also aimed to create a strong visual link with my specific target audience.

In my Foundation Portfolio I used Photoshop to manipulate my music magazine which allowed me to develop many new skills. In the producing stage of creating my magazine I began to edit specific transitions from Photoshop into my own work. I had not used the software before and was new to everything on it but picked it up well by using the key tools to produce a brief final draft. Photoshop allowed me to manipulate an idea and improve it slightly making a key dramatic change. To achieve a clean fresh look on all of my music magazine pages I had to ensure than each page linked into each other so it appeared a continuous music magazine. By visually noting each page the sequencing of specific items where clear and looked very convincing to an audience.

Influential Media Texts

I have chosen these influential media texts regarding particular audiences opinions and values.

What are your first thoughts about the lyrics to this song?
How does this compare to your favourite genre?
What aspects of this video do you like and dislike?

What are your first thoughts about this image?
Why and how do you think he is idolized?
What genre of music do you relate this image to?

Audience Key Terms

Qualitative Data - This is data collected through considering why people like a certain music video due to their values and attitudes. It considers why and how someone might like or dislike their product.

Quantitative Data - This data is collected in a more systematic manner, it is less personal and based more around facts and statistics.

Demographic Data - This is used to create a profile of people to market a project to, usually based on gender (due to the different way men and women think), age (due to the products we use when one is young or old) and social class (people can have a higher disposable income).

Psychographic Data - This is used to collect data about an audiences personality, values, attitudes, interests and lifestyles.

Summary of summer work

Over the summer I wrote a brief stating that I am producing a music video, a cover for CD and a magazine advertisment. I have chosen a song and briefly wrote some background information on the band. Also I have written some key information about my selective genre. I have written a few short bullet points on the conventions of a music video. Also I drew a minutes worth of the beginning of an existing music video, frame by frame.
